Verteboplasty & Kyphoplasty
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are two similar procedures performed to treat fractured vertebrae. Both techniques involve using a hollow needle that is inserted through the skin of the back into the fractured vertebra.
In vertebroplasty, a special bone cement is injected through the hollow needle directly into the fractured vertebra. In contrast, kyphoplasty involves first inserting and inflating a balloon to restore the compressed vertebra to its original height before filling the created space with bone cement.
These procedures are typically repeated for each affected vertebra. Once the cement hardens, it reinforces the vertebra, allowing patients to stand upright, alleviating pain, and reducing the risk of future fractures. If left untreated, the fractures may heal, but often in a collapsed position, leading to ongoing pain and deformity. One of the key benefits of kyphoplasty is that it restores the vertebra to its normal position prior to the cement hardening, resulting in lower pain levels for patients post-procedure.
Research indicates that individuals who experience one osteoporotic fracture are five times more likely to sustain additional fractures. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to seek early treatment for osteoporosis to prevent fractures before they occur.
Who Is The Right Candidate For Treatment?
Individuals who have painful vertebral compression fractures can undergo Vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty
Individuals with osteoporosis or depletion of calcium in bones
- Individuals with metastatic tumor
- Individuals with multiple myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow)
Individuals with vertebral hemangioma (benign vascular tumor)
