Stroke

A stroke or brain disorder happens when a blood clot obstructs a blood vessel or when a blood vessel ruptures, cutting off blood flow to a specific part of the brain.

Type Of Strokes

An ischemic stroke happens when the blood vessel is prevented and it is the most prevalent type of stroke. A hemorrhagic stroke generally occurs when a blood vessel breaks. This type of stroke is less common.

What Happens To The Brain Cells When A Stroke Happens?

During a stroke, blood flow to the brain is interrupted, and since the brain relies on a constant supply of oxygen to function, this disruption can have devastating effects. Without oxygen, the cells in the affected region of the brain, which were previously receiving oxygenated blood, begin to deteriorate and die. This process can occur within minutes and may extend over several hours after the stroke begins. As these cells perish, they release harmful chemicals that exacerbate the situation, causing even more surrounding brain cells to die. This chain reaction is why swift medical intervention is critical in the treatment of ischemic stroke. The window of opportunity for effective treatment is narrow, and timely care can prevent extensive damage and improve the chances of recovery.
