Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder caused by the degeneration of nerve cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra, which plays a key role in controlling movement. As these nerve cells become damaged or die, they lose the ability to produce dopamine, a vital chemical responsible for smooth and coordinated movements. Research has shown that the symptoms of Parkinson’s typically appear when 80 percent or more of the dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra are lost.

Dopamine works in harmony with other neurotransmitters to help regulate the millions of nerve and muscle cells involved in movement. When dopamine levels decrease, this balance is disrupted, leading to motor symptoms such as tremors in the hands, arms, legs, and jaw. Other common signs include limb stiffness, slowness of movement (bradykinesia), and impaired balance or coordination. These symptoms gradually worsen as the disease progresses.

Some Other Symptoms Include

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease primarily relies on the identification of common symptoms, such as tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement, and balance issues. In addition to clinical assessment, noninvasive diagnostic imaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography (PET) scans, can assist healthcare providers in confirming the diagnosis by visualizing the functioning of dopamine-producing cells in the brain.

  • A thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical history, including family history and any previous neurological issues.
  • A comprehensive physical examination to assess motor skills, reflexes, coordination, and balance. This may involve observing the patient for signs of rigidity, bradykinesia, and tremors.

  • Doctors may assess how well the patient responds to dopaminergic medications, as a positive response can support the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.
