Types Of Brain Tumor Surgery
Craniotomy
Before surgery, doctors order various scans, such as MRI or CT scans, to help the surgeon accurately locate the tumor. In some cases, scans are performed during the surgery as well. Many surgeons now use image-guided techniques, where the scans are uploaded into a computer to precisely pinpoint the tumor’s location during the operation.
After removing the brain tumor, the surgeon carefully replaces the piece of bone and secures it using small permanent metal brackets. The scalp is then stitched back in place over the bone. In most cases, the hair will grow back and cover the surgical scars, making them less visible.
Awake Craniotomy
The surgeon may recommend an awake craniotomy if the brain tumor is located near an area responsible for critical functions, such as speech, movement, or sensation. This approach helps protect vital brain functions during the procedure.
There are different ways to perform an awake craniotomy. In some cases, the patient remains awake for only a portion of the surgery, while in others, the person is conscious for the entire procedure. The surgeon determines the best approach based on the specifics of the tumor and the brain functions involved. After the main part of the surgery is completed, general anesthesia is often administered again for the final stages of the operation.
At the beginning of the surgery, general anesthesia is used to ensure the patient is comfortable. If the patient will be awake for part of the procedure, the anesthesia is gradually reduced to allow them to wake up for the critical portion of the surgery. Local anesthesia is also applied to numb areas such as the skin and muscles, though the brain itself does not feel pain.
During the awake portion of the surgery, the surgeon may ask the patient to perform certain tasks, such as speaking, moving a limb, or reporting sensations. This process, known as function mapping, helps the surgeon ensure that essential brain functions remain intact. By monitoring the patient’s responses, the surgeon can minimize the risk of damaging critical areas of the brain.
