Lumbar Disc Prolapse
Treatment Of Lumbar Disc Prolapse
Lumbar laminotomy is a surgical technique commonly used to alleviate leg pain and sciatica caused by a herniated disc. This procedure involves making an incision along the center of the back, directly over the area where the herniated disc is located. During the operation, a small portion of the lamina, which is a part of the vertebra that forms the back of the spinal canal, may be removed to create more space and reduce pressure on the affected nerve roots.
Once the lamina is partially removed, a discectomy is performed, which involves removing the portion of the herniated disc that is pressing on the nerves. This helps relieve the pain and discomfort caused by the disc material impinging on nerve structures.
In some cases, after the herniated disc is removed, the stability of the spine may be compromised. To address this, spinal fusion is often done in conjunction with a laminotomy. Spinal fusion involves joining two or more vertebrae together using bone grafts, screws, and rods to provide additional support and stability to the spine. This combination of procedures can effectively reduce pain and restore function, particularly in cases where the herniated disc has caused significant nerve compression and structural issues within the spine.
